Stanford Geriatric Education Center (SGEC) announces two educational programs in geriatrics for 2010.

A very low cost monthly webinar series on Ethnicity and the Dementias featuring information on assessment and working with families for elders with dementia in six different ethnic populations now offers Continuing Medical Education that can be used by  physicians and psychologists, as well as the previously approved CEUs for nurses, clinical social workers, and marriage and family therapists. Interactive, Online Program on Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender Issues in Aging

UC San Diego Extension presents an interactive, online program designed for all healthcare professionals in order to enhance their care of the LGBT ( Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgender) senior patient population.  Developed by Aging As Ourselves of San Diego, the course offers up-to-date information on health issues, mainstream and LGBT aging commonalities and differences, barriers and consequences of disclosure, mental health issues, and community resources.  It is taught by Ruth Covell, M.D., Associate Dean and Professor of Family and Preventive Medicine at UCSD School of Medicine.  She also directs the Academic Geriatric Resource Center, chairs the Professional Advisory Board of the George S. Web Seminar Available From ASA!

The American Society on Aging has added a third free “on demand” web seminar addressing substance abuse.  Just added: The Deadly Triangle: The Relationship between Depression, Alcoholism, Suicide and Older Adults.This is in addition to :Alcohol and Aging: Obstacles to Identification and Communication Skills to Create Conversations with Older Adults Who May Be Abusing/Misusing Substances.
These half-hour seminars feature Patrick Arbore, Director and Co-founder of the Center for Elderly Suicide Prevention and Grief-Related Services, and are available for viewing at any time The presentations are made possible by a contract awarded by the California Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs.
The ASA offers free training and technical assistance on abuse and misuse of Alcohol and Other Drugs(AOD) for providers in nonprofit and governmental agencies in California to help them better serve their older clients. These are the first in the web seminar series, which will include six more web seminars on similar topics this year.
